Feng Shui Fridays

TGIF! Let’s wrap this work week up with some Feng Shui basics to help bring you better luck!

Feng Shui dates back thousands of years in China where it is a study based on the flow of energy or “Chi” through the home. Proper flow of “Chi” meant good fortune and poor flow of “Chi” could hinder your luck.

Here are the basics:

  1. Clear your home of clutter. When there is excess clutter, the energy cannot flow through your home. So keeping your home neat and tidy promotes the natural flow of “Chi”.
  2. Keep your home bright. Let the natural light in! Always open all your curtains first thing in the morning and allow the sunshine to flood your home and bring good “Chi”. Light = Energy! If your home is in the shade and naturally dark, turn the lights on! Having sufficient light throughout the home brings good energy.

Let the light in! Especially if it is your front bay window!
  3. Placement of reflective surfaces such as mirrors are very important. The art of Feng Shui believes that putting a mirror in front of a door or window will reflect all the good “Chi” and good fortune that comes into the home right out the door or window! It is also said that putting a mirror in front of your bed will cause illness or sleeplessness. This includes TVs which have a reflective surface when turned off! The bedroom is a place for rest and should not be doubling as your living room or office. Reflective surfaces increase the flow of “Chi” and this is not conducive to restful sleep. If you absolutely cannot live without a TV in your room, there are creative solutions in hiding it – in an armoire or behind a curtain. At the very least, drape a covering over the reflective surface at night before going to sleep.

Notice my mirrors are perpendicular to my front door and not facing the front door.
  4. Crystals. To increase the energy of your home, the use of clear quartz crystals is said to increase the positive vibration within your home. Whether you use actual clusters of crystal and incorporate it into your decor, or have crystal chandeliers, vases and wine glasses, it all helps to bring better “Chi” into your home.

  5. Finally, keep the entryway of your home clutter free. That means putting away all those shoes! Clutter by the front door hinders the flow of “Chi” into your home.

Do you believe in Feng Shui? I hope this will get you started to bring good energy into your home. Drop me a line and let me know how you incorporate Feng Shui into your surroundings, or let me know if you have any specific questions.

XO, Amy
